I needed a metaphor to explain IT-security to my mom. She loves her iPad, but it’s old, very old, and hasn’t been getting OS updates since iOS 17. it’s still running 16! This is what I came up with:

Think of a spaceship as your home on the internet. You make sure it doesn't have any holes, because otherwise you'll run out of air. There's a window you really like, and you don't want to touch it. It's old and brittle, has a few cracks and keeps making ominous popping noises. But it's just this one window, how bad could it be? All the other windows are sealed tight, this one window will surely be fine.

Stell dir vor du hast ein Raumschiff, das ist dein Zuhause im Internet. Du sorgst dafür, dass es keine Löcher hat, weil sonst hast du keine Luft mehr. Aber ein Fenster, das findest du super, das magst du nicht anfassen. Es ist schon alt und brüchig, hat einige Risse und immer wieder knackt es ominös. Aber es ist ja nur dieses Fenster, was soll schon passieren, alle anderen Fenster sind ja dicht, das eine Fenster, das wird schon gut gehen.
